The story begins with Sikhs and Hindus being attacked by Muslims in Pakistan when migrating to India by train from the railway station in West Punjab, Pakistan. In response, Sikhs and Hindus reply by killing Muslims migrating to Pakistan from East Punjab, India. During the Hindu-Muslim riots that erupted soon after the Partition, Tara Singh (Sunny Deol), a Jat Sikh truck driver, also plans to kill Muslims. Still, he stops after recognising Sakina (Ameesha Patel), a Muslim girl from an aristocratic family, at the railway station, from the little Taj Mahal antique in her hands. He saves and protects her from a murderous mob chasing her because she failed to get onto the train with her family members after being lost in the crowd.
Tara takes Sakina to his home in Amritsar and gradually falls in love with her. He convinces her to marry him and they have a son named Charanjeet (Utkarsh Sharma). The happy family lives peacefully until one day Sakina sees a newspaper with a picture of her father, Ashraf Ali (Amrish Puri), who is now the mayor of Lahore in Pakistan. She learns that he is still alive and wants to meet her. She decides to go to Lahore without telling Tara and Charanjeet, hoping to reunite with her father and return soon.
However, things take a turn for the worse when Sakina reaches Lahore and finds out that her father has other plans for her. He wants her to forget about Tara and Charanjeet and marry his friend's son, Sarfaraz (Samar Jaisingh), who is also a politician. He also tries to brainwash her into believing that Tara is a traitor and a murderer who kidnapped her during the Partition. Sakina is torn between her love for Tara and her loyalty to her father.
Meanwhile, Tara learns about Sakina's whereabouts and decides to cross the border into Pakistan to find his love. He faces many obstacles and dangers along the way, but he does not give up. He finally reaches Lahore and confronts Ashraf Ali and Sarfaraz. He proves his innocence and love for Sakina and challenges them
to a hand pump fight. Tara wins the fight and takes Sakina and Charanjeet back to India. However, Ashraf Ali and Sarfaraz follow them and try to stop them at the Wagah border. A violent clash ensues between Tara and Ashraf Ali's men, resulting in many casualties on both sides. Tara manages to cross the border with Sakina and Charanjeet, but he is shot by Ashraf Ali. Sakina begs her father to spare Tara's life and tells him that she loves him more than anything. Ashraf Ali realizes his mistake and apologizes to Tara.
